Novi Beograd was designed to become a symbol of Yugoslav modernisation and unity and, as such, it represents a paradigm of collective housing in Socialist Yugoslavia.
During its construction, numerous architects, such as Mihailo Čanak and Aleksandar Stjepanović, designed residential blocks and flats in Novi Beograd by applying a system of principles established through the observance of relations between society and family with a view to the creation of a space for living which is as functional and pleasant as possible. Novi Beograd’s housing, infrastructure, the vicinity of two rivers, large green surfaces, numerous playgrounds and a good position were just some of the numerous advantages due to which “life in the blocks” could be described as fairly privileged even today. During this tour of the Novi Beograd residential blocks, we will tell you a story about the vision of a new city in the former Socialist society, of flats being available to all, of various urban development ideas and of breakthroughs in the formation of a humane and functional flat.
